We are happy to report our first funded project by the Rashid S. Conteh Memorial Foundation is renovating the maternity wing at the Evans Medical Center in Lungi, Sierra Leone. This medical center is owned and overseen by Dr. Hassan Sesay with day-to-day operations provided by government medical staff assigned to the clinic. Since the existence of this medical center, there have been over 500 successful deliveries and 166 of these deliveries were in 2022. All of these deliveries were conducted free of charge to patients. Due to financial constraints during construction of the center, the walls of the maternity wing were plastered instead of using tile for the wall covering material. Health inspectors recently advised that the wing should be tiled so that blood and fluids that splash on walls may be properly cleaned to reduce the spread of infection. Current detergents used to clean fluids from the walls erodes the paint, and tiling provides a sanitary environment in the labor and delivery area.
The project is now completed, with pictures provided below. The tiling brings the maternity ward to medical standard, allowing any fluids splashed on walls to be easily and completely cleaned, providing a healthy and safe area for patients and medical personnel.
